| 45–below 53 | D | 1.00 | D+ begins at 53 marks |
| Below 45 | F | 0.00 | D begins at 45 marks |
Important: This is the published UoK reference table used by the calculator. Some faculties and degree programs state different passing requirements. Use your transcript points or current department rules when they differ.
How Do Decimal Marks Affect Your KU Grade?
The calculator does not round marks before selecting a grade band. Each decimal score stays inside its actual range.
- 74.99 marks remain a B with 3.00 points.
- 75.00 marks enter the B+ band with 3.40 points.
- 84.99 marks remain an A− with 3.80 points.
- 85.00 marks enter the A band with 4.00 points.
- 89.99 marks remain an A, while 90.00 becomes A+.
An A and A+ both carry 4.00 grade points in the published scale. Moving from 89 to 90 changes the letter grade but not the course grade-point value.
Why Might Your Transcript Use Different Grade Points?
University rules may differ by faculty, degree program, admission batch, or affiliated institution. Passing marks and degree requirements can also follow separate program rules.
Use My Transcript Points when the grade points printed on your record differ from this chart. Your official transcript should remain the final source for entered grades and attempted credits.
What Are GPR and CGPR at Karachi University?
UoK materials often use GPR for a semester result and CGPR for the cumulative academic result. Students commonly search for the same ideas as GPA and CGPA.
The calculator displays both terms so the result remains clear while matching University of Karachi terminology.
What Can This Grading Chart Confirm?
The chart can show the letter grade and grade points linked to entered marks. It can also show how far a score sits from the next published grade band.
It cannot confirm:
- Academic probation
- Promotion to the next year
- Degree completion
- Distinction or merit position
- Repeat-course replacement
- Scrutiny or rechecking outcomes
- An official CGPA-to-percentage conversion
Confirm these decisions through your department, current semester rules, and official academic record.
What Does Your Karachi University GPA or CGPA Result Mean?
Your result shows how the entered grades, marks, and credit hours affect your academic average. A semester GPA or GPR covers the current courses only. An updated CGPA or CGPR combines those courses with your earlier record. Target results show what may still be possible.
Understanding Your Result
Your result changes with the mode you select. Semester GPA covers the courses entered for one term. Updated CGPA includes your earlier academic record, while target mode shows the GPA needed across future credits.
Read the score with its credit total, quality points, scale used, and result type. These details explain why the number changed and what it can help you plan.
Semester GPA or GPR
A semester GPA or GPR represents only the completed course rows entered in the KU GPA calculator. It does not include grades from earlier semesters.
Credit hours control how much each course affects the result. A four-credit course has twice the weight of a two-credit course with the same grade points.
Updated CGPA or CGPR
An updated CGPA combines your current cumulative score with the new semester courses. Previous attempted credits form the base of the calculation.
A stronger semester may raise your CGPA. A weaker term may lower it. The calculator also shows the estimated change from your earlier score.
Students with many completed credits may see only a small change. Their existing academic record carries more weight than one new semester.
Target CGPA Result
The required GPA shows the semester average needed across your planned credits.
- 0.01 to 4.00: The target is mathematically reachable.
- Above 4.00: The target cannot be reached within that credit load.
- 0.00 or lower: Your current score already protects the entered target.
The maximum possible CGPA assumes a perfect 4.00 GPA across every planned credit. It is a mathematical ceiling, not a grade forecast.
Quality Points
Quality points are the weighted values behind your GPA and CGPA. Each course earns them from its credit hours and grade points.
A three-credit course with 4.00 grade points adds 12.00 quality points. A two-credit course with the same grade adds 8.00.
Marks to Next Grade
This result shows how many marks separate a course from the next published KU grade band.
Decimal marks remain in their actual range. A score of 74.99 stays below the 75-mark boundary. The message does not predict scrutiny, rechecking, or a mark increase.
Percentage and Division Reference
Percentage comes from obtained marks divided by maximum marks.
The calculator uses these common reference bands:
- 60% or more: First Division Reference
- 45% to below 60%: Second Division Reference
- 33% to below 45%: Third Division Reference
- Below 33%: Below Division Reference
This mode does not create an official CGPA, CGPR, or HEC equivalence.

Is Your Result Good or Bad?
A single GPA number cannot confirm whether your academic position is good or bad. The meaning depends on your degree program, completed credits, target, and current department rules.
Use these comparisons instead:
- Compare semester GPA with your current CGPA.
- Check whether the new term raises or lowers your cumulative score.
- Review the GPA needed for your target.
- Confirm official requirements with your department or transcript.
A reachable target still needs realistic course grades. An unreachable result means the planned credits are not enough, even with a 4.00 GPA.
What Should You Do Next?
- Check that the selected KU scale matches your transcript.
- Confirm your previous attempted-credit total.
- Review high-credit courses because they affect GPA more.
- Try a longer credit plan when the required GPA exceeds 4.00.
Do not use the estimate to confirm probation, promotion, distinction, or graduation eligibility.
What Is a Quick Updated CGPA Example to Test?
This example uses Updated CGPA mode with the Published UoK Scale.
Input
- Current CGPA: 2.45
- Previous Attempted Credits: 48
- Course 1: 3 credits, 88 marks
- Course 2: 4 credits, 73 marks
- Course 3: 3 credits, 66 marks
- Course 4: 2 credits, 54 marks
Result
- New Semester GPA: 2.83
- Updated CGPA: 2.53
- Combined Credits: 60
- Combined Quality Points: 151.60
- CGPA Change: +0.08
Meaning
The entered semester raises the cumulative estimate from 2.45 to 2.53. The increase stays small because the previous 48 credits carry more weight than the new 12 credits.
The result is useful for planning. Your official CGPR still depends on the academic record and rules applied by your department.

How the Karachi University CGPA Formula Works (Complete Breakdown)
The Karachi University CGPA Calculator uses credit-weighted grade points. It does not take a simple average of course grades. Each course earns quality points based on its grade and credit hours. Those points produce your semester GPA, updated CGPA, or required target GPA.
Course Quality Points Formula
Course Quality Points = Credit Hours × Grade Points
This formula finds the weighted value of one course. A course with more credit hours affects the final result more than a smaller course with the same grade.
A four-credit course at 3.00 grade points earns 12.00 quality points. A two-credit course at 3.00 earns 6.00.
Semester GPA or GPR Formula
Semester GPA = Total Semester Quality Points ÷ Total GPA-Bearing Credits
The calculator adds the quality points from every completed course row. It then divides that total by the included credit hours.
University of Karachi documents commonly use GPR for the semester result. Students often search for the same result as GPA.
Previous Quality Points Formula
Semester GPA = Total Semester Quality Points ÷ Total GPA-BearingPrevious Quality Points =
Current CGPA
×
Previous Attempted Credits Credits
A current CGPA already represents earlier grades and credits. This formula rebuilds the quality points behind that cumulative score.
Use the attempted-credit total already included in your transcript’s CGPA or CGPR. Using only passed credits may change the result.
Updated CGPA or CGPR Formula
Updated CGPA = ( Previous Quality Points + New Semester Quality Points ) ÷ ( Previous Attempted Credits + New Semester Credits )
This formula combines your earlier academic record with the new semester.
Previous quality points and new quality points are added together. The calculator then divides them by the combined credit total.
University of Karachi materials use CGPR for the cumulative result. The term CGPA is more common in student searches and academic planning.
CGPA Change Formula
CGPA Change = Updated CGPA − Current CGPA
This calculation shows how much the entered semester changes your cumulative score.
A positive value means the estimate increases. A negative value means it decreases. A zero result means the new semester leaves the displayed CGPA unchanged.
Required Target GPA Formula
Required GPA = [ Target CGPA × (Completed Credits + Planned Credits) − Current CGPA × Completed Credits ] ÷ Planned Credits
This formula finds the average GPA needed across the planned credit hours.
A result between 0.01 and 4.00 is mathematically reachable. A result above 4.00 means the target cannot be reached within that credit load.
When the raw answer is zero or negative, the calculator displays 0.00. This means the entered target is already protected under the current plan.
Maximum Possible CGPA Formula
Maximum Possible CGPA = [ Current CGPA × Completed Credits + 4.00 × Planned Credits ] ÷ (Completed Credits + Planned Credits)
This formula assumes a perfect 4.00 GPA across every planned credit.
The result shows the highest cumulative score possible within that credit load. It is a mathematical limit, not a prediction of future grades.
Percentage Formula
Percentage = (Obtained Marks ÷ Maximum Marks) × 100
Percentage mode compares the marks earned with the total available marks.
The result is placed into a common division reference:
60% or above = 1st Division Reference 45% to below 60% = 2nd Division Reference 33% to below 45% = 3rd Division Reference Below 33% = Below Division Reference
This mode does not convert percentage into an official KU CGPA, CGPR, or HEC equivalence.
What Do the GPA and CGPA Variables Mean?
| Variable | Meaning |
|---|---|
| GPA | The credit-weighted grade point average for the courses entered from one semester. |
| GPR | The University of Karachi term used for a semester grade point result. |
| CGPA | The cumulative grade point average across the academic record included in the calculation. |

| 4.00 | The highest GPA value accepted by the calculator’s grade-point system. |
Terminology note: University of Karachi materials use GPR for a semester result and CGPR for a cumulative result. Students often use GPA and CGPA when searching or planning their academic scores.
Another Example Calculation
This example uses Updated CGPA mode with the Published UoK Scale. It shows how one new semester changes an earlier cumulative result.
Given:
- Course 1 = 3 credits, 86 marks
- Course 2 = 3 credits, 76 marks
- Course 3 = 4 credits, 72 marks
- Course 4 = 2 credits, 55 marks
The published scale assigns these values:
- 86 marks = A = 4.00 grade points
- 76 marks = B+ = 3.40 grade points
- 72 marks = B = 3.00 grade points
- 55 marks = D+ = 1.40 grade points
Calculation:
Course 1 Quality Points = 3 × 4.00 = 12.00
Course 2 Quality Points = 3 × 3.40 = 10.20
Course 3 Quality Points = 4 × 3.00 = 12.00
Course 4 Quality Points = 2 × 1.40 = 2.80
New Semester Quality Points =
12.00 + 10.20 + 12.00 + 2.80
New Semester Quality Points = 37.00
New Semester Credits =
3 + 3 + 4 + 2
New Semester Credits = 12
New Semester GPA =
37.00 ÷ 12
New Semester GPA = 3.08
Previous Quality Points =
2.70 × 48
Previous Quality Points = 129.60
Updated CGPA =
(129.60 + 37.00)
÷
(48 + 12)
Updated CGPA =
166.60 ÷ 60
Updated CGPA = 2.78
CGPA Change =
2.78 − 2.70
CGPA Change = +0.08
Result:
- New Semester GPA = 3.08
- Updated CGPA or CGPR = 2.78
- Combined Credits = 60
- Combined Quality Points = 166.60
- CGPA Change = +0.08
Meaning
The new semester raises the cumulative estimate from 2.70 to 2.78. Its 3.08 semester GPA is higher than the starting CGPA.
The increase remains 0.08 because the previous 48 credits carry more weight than the 12 new credits.
How Do You Calculate Karachi University GPA and CGPA?
Karachi University GPA uses credit-weighted grade points. Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours. Add all quality points, then divide by total included credits. CGPA uses the same method but includes your earlier attempted credits. Target mode works backward from a desired cumulative score.
How Is KU GPA Calculated From Raw Marks?
A student wants to calculate one semester from four course scores.
Input
- Computer Science: 3 credits, 91 marks
- Mathematics: 4 credits, 78 marks
- Statistics: 3 credits, 67 marks
- English: 2 credits, 46 marks
Process
The published KU scale assigns:
- 91 marks = A+ = 4.00 points
- 78 marks = B+ = 3.40 points
- 67 marks = C+ = 2.40 points
- 46 marks = D = 1.00 point
Course quality points:
- Computer Science: 3 × 4.00 = 12.00
- Mathematics: 4 × 3.40 = 13.60
- Statistics: 3 × 2.40 = 7.20
- English: 2 × 1.00 = 2.00
Total quality points equal 34.80. Total credit hours equal 12.
Result
- Semester GPA or GPR: 2.90
Meaning
The four-credit Mathematics course has the strongest weight in this result. Statistics is also one mark below the B− grade band, which starts at 68.
How Does One Semester Change an Existing KU CGPA?
A student has completed 66 credits with a 2.90 CGPA. Four new courses are added through Updated CGPA mode.
Input
- Current CGPA: 2.90
- Previous attempted credits: 66
New semester courses:
- Course 1: 3 credits, 92 marks
- Course 2: 4 credits, 79 marks
- Course 3: 3 credits, 72 marks
- Course 4: 2 credits, 65 marks
Process
The new courses produce:
3 × 4.00 = 12.00 quality points
4 × 3.40 = 13.60 quality points
3 × 3.00 = 9.00 quality points
2 × 2.40 = 4.80 quality points
New semester quality points equal 39.40.
New semester GPA:
39.40 ÷ 12 = 3.28
Earlier quality points:
2.90 × 66 = 191.40
Updated CGPA:
(191.40 + 39.40) ÷ (66 + 12)
= 230.80 ÷ 78
= 2.96
Result
- New semester GPA: 3.28
- Updated CGPA or CGPR: 2.96
- Combined credits: 78
- Combined quality points: 230.80
- CGPA change: +0.06
Meaning
The semester raises the cumulative estimate from 2.90 to 2.96. The change stays limited because the earlier 66 credits carry more weight than the 12 new credits.
Can a 2.75 CGPA Reach 3.00 in 18 Credits?
A student wants to know whether a 3.00 cumulative score remains possible.
Input
- Current CGPA: 2.75
- Completed credits: 72
- Target CGPA: 3.00
- Planned credits: 18
Process
Required GPA =
[3.00 × (72 + 18) − 2.75 × 72] ÷ 18
Required GPA =
(270.00 − 198.00) ÷ 18
Required GPA = 4.00
Maximum possible CGPA:
(2.75 × 72 + 4.00 × 18) ÷ 90
= 270.00 ÷ 90
= 3.00
Result
- Required GPA: 4.00
- Maximum possible CGPA: 3.00
- Target status: Reachable
Meaning
The target is mathematically possible, but only with a 4.00 GPA across all 18 planned credits. Any lower semester GPA would leave the cumulative score below 3.00.
What Percentage Gives a Second Division Reference?
A student has an annual-system marks sheet and wants a percentage result.
Input
- Obtained marks: 528
- Maximum marks: 900
Process
Percentage =
(528 ÷ 900) × 100
Percentage = 58.67%
Result
Percentage: 58.67%
Division: 2nd Division Reference
Meaning
The result falls between 45% and below 60%. This mode gives a common division reference only. It does not convert 58.67% into an official KU CGPA, CGPR, or HEC equivalence.
Quick Rules to Remember
Use the scale printed on your transcript when it differs from the published KU chart. Enter attempted credits already included in your current CGPA. Keep decimal marks unchanged. Treat percentage and division as separate from GPA conversion.
Karachi University CGPA Calculator Target Benchmarks
The Karachi University CGPA Calculator should not label every score as good or bad. Its clearest benchmark is target reachability. Compare the required GPA with the 4.00 limit to see whether your goal is protected, reachable, or outside the entered credit plan.
| Required GPA Range | Status | Calculator Meaning | Planning Action | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.00 or lower | Target Protected | Your current CGPA already supports the entered target under this credit plan. | Check the inputs, then focus on maintaining your cumulative score. | The calculator displays a negative required GPA as 0.00. |
| 0.01–4.00 | Reachable | Your target is mathematically possible within the planned credit hours. | Compare the required GPA with realistic course-grade combinations. | A result near 4.00 leaves little room for lower grades. |
| Above 4.00 | Not Reachable | The target exceeds what a 4.00 GPA can produce within this credit load. | Add more future credits or choose a nearer short-term target. | The maximum possible CGPA shows the ceiling for the entered plan. |
Heads-up: These ranges explain the calculator’s target-planning result. They do not confirm probation, promotion, distinction, degree eligibility, or official academic standing.
Interpretation
A reachable result means the math works within the entered credits. It does not mean the required grades will be easy. A 3.20 target needing a 3.95 semester GPA is possible, but it leaves very little room for lower course grades.
A result above 4.00 shows that the planned credits are too limited. The issue is not the formula. Your current CGPA, completed credits, and remaining credit load make that target unavailable within the selected period.
Pro Tip
Test more than one planned-credit total. A target that fails over 12 credits may become reachable across 24 or 30 future credits. Keep the current CGPA and completed credits unchanged while comparing each plan.

Try calculatorFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is the Karachi University CGPA Calculator an official KU tool?
No. The Karachi University CGPA Calculator is an independent planning tool. It applies the selected KU scale and credit-weighted logic, but it cannot access university records or issue an official result. Use your transcript, department notice, or examination record as the final source.
Why does the calculated CGPA differ from my KU transcript?
A difference may come from the selected grade scale, attempted credits, repeated courses, or department rules. Your transcript may also exclude or replace certain grades. Check every credit and grade point before calculating. The tool cannot copy hidden adjustments used by the university.
Can I calculate CGPA by averaging my semester GPAs?
A simple average works only when every semester has the same credit load. When credit totals differ, each semester must be weighted by its credits. A 3.50 GPA over 18 credits affects CGPA more than a 3.50 GPA over 12 credits.
Should failed or repeated courses be included in the calculator?
Include a failed or repeated course only when it remains part of the academic record represented by your CGPA. The calculator does not apply grade replacement rules automatically. Use the attempted credits and grade points already reflected on your latest transcript.
How should I enter W, I, IP, or non-credit courses?
Do not enter W, I, IP, audit, or zero-credit courses as regular graded courses. The calculator accepts GPA-bearing grades and positive credit hours only. Check your transcript to see whether the course carries grade points before adding it to the calculation.
Is a Karachi University aggregate calculator the same as a GPA calculator?
No. An aggregate calculator usually estimates admission merit from entry-test scores, academic marks, and set weightings. A KU GPA calculator measures semester or cumulative academic performance using grade points and credit hours. The two tools answer different questions and use different inputs.
Is 95% equal to 10 CGPA at Karachi University?
No. This calculator uses a 4.00 GPA scale, not a 10-point CGPA scale. Marks must pass through the selected KU grade table before they affect GPA. A percentage from another system cannot be treated as a direct Karachi University CGPA.
Does the calculator round marks or CGPA during calculation?
The calculator keeps decimal marks in their actual grade band and uses full values during the calculation. It rounds the displayed GPA or CGPA to two decimal places. A mark of 74.99 stays below the 75-mark B+ boundary rather than becoming 75.
